With 6 points on my licence I wouldn’t be without this device in my car now. Its kept me in check for the last 2.5 years (yay, only a few months to go!) and has saved me from the dreaded camera at least twice in that time. Probably the best function is the overspeed warnings where the screen turns red and an alert sounds
- with adjustable volume its far better than Waze which you just can’t hear if you have music playing. You can set the alert to sound at the speed limit, 5% or 10% over the limit.
Other alerts for fixed cameras, bus lanes, school zones, average cameras work great, as does the smart motorway function which alerts to temp speed limits or lane closures. You can set a different alert alarm for each type of camera or zone.
Mobile speed camera van locations are always shown and a recent update means that you don’t get an alarm sounding for each one unless over the speed limit. You now have a choice to tap the unit to say weather there is actually a van there. This is where the website advertising is misleading - it DOESN’T show live van locations unless another Road Angel user has passed by AND tapped to say there is a van there. I’ve passed numerous live vans even on busy motorways and it hasn’t shown them as live. The unit requires the human interaction of someone in front of you to enable this. Road Angel should stop advertising this function like this and make it clear how it actually works. Afterall, its a camera van thats most likely to catch you if you accidentally stray over the limit.
GPS can be a little sluggish to catch up with the cars gps speedo readout when braking or accelerating swiftly sometimes, but would only catch you out if you accelerated quickly right near a camera, which you’re unlikely to do.
That said, it’s the best of the bunch out there and well worth the investment if you want to keep your licence clean or be reminded constantly (as I do) that you have a heavy right foot to keep you in check.
Hardwired mine in and it turns on and off with the Tesla when i start it up and get out of the car which is a nice touch.
App was a little fiddly to sync with the unit but the RA customer service and tech guys were absolutely first class and had me sorted very quickly - other tech companies could learn a thing or two from these guys.
Overall, if you’re concerned about already having or getting more points on your licence its a no brainer investment and constant travel must have companion on the dash. Thoroughly recommended!
