Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a dash cam?

A dash cam is an extra level of necessary protection for you, your family, any passengers and your vehicle. A dash cam does not just protect you from simple accidents in car parks and between average road users. ‘Crash for cash’ scams are run by fraudsters who manufacture collisions which cost the UK around £340m a year.

Does this camera come with an SD Card?

The SD card is not supplied with the Dashcam, we recommend purchasing a high endurance automotive grade SD card by Road Angel. Check out our automotive grade SD cards here

How do I format my SD card?

You can format your SD card directly through the Halo app or via the dashcam’s menu. Make sure the camera is powered on, then open the app and select the format option in the settings. Keep the device powered during formatting and never remove the card while the process is running.

How do I format my SD card in my Halo Ultima?

It allow quick formatting by pressing the power button 3 times in sequence, which will format the SD card, or 5 times to perform a full factory reset. This is a fast method but will not always fully clear all data. For the most reliable and complete format, we recommend using a computer.

How do I connect to the Halo via Wi-Fi?

Download our App from the Google Play store of Apple Appstore. Launch the app and press the ‘+’ icon in the top right corner, then follow the instruction that will be shown in the app. The default Wi-Fi password is set to ‘1234567890’.

What Micro SD card should I use?

Road Angel recommends a Class 10 or higher Micro SD card with a capacity between 16GB and 128GB. Higher‑endurance cards are preferred for continuous loop recording, and larger capacities reduce the frequency of overwritten footage. Check out our automotive grade SD cards here

Do Road Angel dash cams work in Europe?

What are the password requirements for my dash cam WiFi? (PSTI Compliance)

Your dash cam WiFi password must be 8–12 characters long, include a combination of letters and numbers, and must not be a common or easily guessable password.

Why can’t I connect to my dash cam via WiFi?

Your dash cam creates a local WiFi connection (not internet). You must be within 5–10metresof the vehicle. It is normal for the connection to show 'No Internet Access'.

Why does Apple CarPlay or Android Auto stop the app from connecting?

Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto use WiFi and Bluetooth, which can interfere with the dash cam's connection. Disable them or turn off auto-connect to resolve this.

Why does the WiFi disappear when the ignition is off?

This is normal. The dash cam enters parking mode and may disable WiFi to reduce power consumption and as an additional privacy/security measure.

Why is my dash cam not recording properly?

Common causes include SD card compatibility or formatting issues, or power problems. Format the card in the camera and ensure a proper power supply using a compact, high-spec automotive-grade SD card.

Can I use the dash cam without professional installation?

Yes, via a 12V socket. For parking mode, a compatible hardwire kit isrequired.

Why isn’t parking mode working?

Parking mode requires permanent power and ignition power via a compatible hardwire kit. It will not work on a standard 12V socket alone.

Why does my phone disconnect automatically?

Phones prioritise internet-connected networks and OEM convenience protocols, so switching away from the dash cam's WiFi is normal.

Why are number plates not always readable?

Factors include speed, frame rate, settings, lighting, and motion blur, even on high-resolution cameras.

Can I leave my dash cam plugged in?

Yes, if using a proper hardwire kit or battery pack with voltage protection.

Why does my vehicle show errors with OBD?

Some vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, EVs) may trigger warnings. Use a fuse tap, hardwire instead.

I don't have a smartphone, can I still view recorded footage?

You can use the smartphone app to view, play back, and download footage. If you don’t have a compatible phone, you can remove the SD card and view files on a computer, but full functionality requires the App.

You can find all the necessary resources from our Support Center. Here you will find all the device downloads, firmware release notes, Computer software and helpful User Guides.

How do I fix Apple CarPlay / Android Auto issues?

Disable wireless connections or auto-join features so the phone can connect directly to the dash cam.

When should I pair my phone to the dash camera?

Only when viewing footage, downloading videos, or changing settings.

Does the dash cam rely on my smartphone?

No. It operates independently, powered by the car and a compatible automotive-grade SD card.

Why am I getting an SD card error on my dash cam?

An SD card error is typically caused by formatting or compatibility issues. To resolve this, remove the SD card and format it using a computer. If the card is over 32GB, you will need dedicated formatting software, as standard Windows or Mac tools may not apply the correct file system. Dash cams require a specific format (typically FAT32) to ensure stable recording, proper file structure, and continuous loop recording, and incorrect formatting can lead to recording failures, freezing, or corrupt footage.
