How to Install Firmware

To update your Road Angel PURE firmware, please follow these instructions. This process typically takes between 15 and 45 minutes, though it can occasionally take up to an hour.


1. Download the Software

  • Visit the Road Angel website at www.roadangelgroup.com and navigate to the 'Support Centre' section.
  • Select 'Pure' in the Speed Awareness tab.
  • Click the correct download link for your PC or Mac.
  • If prompted, save the updater file to your 'Downloads' folder.

2. Installation Guide

For PC Users

  • Open the downloaded 'Road Angel Updater' from your browser or file explorer.
  • Select 'Allow' when asked if the program can make changes to your PC.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts, clicking 'Next' and 'Install'.
  • Click 'Finish' once the installation is complete.

For Mac Users

  • Click the download arrow in the top right of your browser and open the Road Angel updater.
  • Select 'Allow' to permit the program to make changes.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions by clicking 'Continue' and 'Install'.
  • Click 'Close' once the installation is finished.

3. Performing the Update

  • Connect your Road Angel PURE to your computer using the provided USB cable.
  • Launch the Road Angel Updater program from your desktop or start menu.
  • Ensure your device is on and displays: "Connected to PC OK to unplug".
  • The updater software should show a green tick and the message "Device Connected".
  • Click the blue 'Update' button to begin.

Important: DO NOT UNPLUG the device during the update. Only disconnect once the PURE returns to the home screen or displays the "OK to unplug" message again.

  • The prompt voices after alert and live van have been removed as they were deemed too annoying.
  • Respect the mute setting for the startup voice message.
  • Only play the startup voice message 5 times ever, after that only the text prompt is shown.
  • Don't allow reporting of blackspot, school, laser, or smart motorway-related alerts.
  • Cancel alert prompt message if another alert occurs.
  • Reduce alert prompt timeout to 5sec if the speed is 50mph or greater.
  • Code for disabling alert report prompts has been added for later use by the app.

Update v2.6.0.759 - 7th May 24
  • Fix: local alert database could be corrupted by connectivity issues whilst downloading updated.
  • Change: setting a Camera Van alert live is now done after the alert has finished.
  • Update: this release will trigger a download of a fresh copy of the alert database to fix any errors.
  • Update: the latest Road Speed Library is included.
  • Feature: a voice prompt is played after the first Camera Van alert to remind about the set live feature.
  • Feature: Alert reporting.
  • If an alert is wrong then it can be reported once the alert has finished.

Is the Road Angel Pure a Speed Camera Detector?

Road Angel Pure is a GPS-based speed camera and speed limit alert system with real-time, cloud-updated data, including support for smart motorways.

What type of Speed Cameras does the Road Angel Pure Detect?

Road Angel alerts to fixed, average, variable, red light, and dual speed cameras. It also includes mobile enforcement zones, accident blackspots, congestion areas, school zones, and ungated railway crossings.

Why am I not receiving alerts?

Check subscription status, GPS signal, location permissions, device settings, and perform a full smartphone restart.

How often is the database updated?

The database is updated daily and in real-time with continuous improvements.

Does the Road Angel Pure have to be hardwired in?

It may do, as long as you have positioned it in the correct place. Please note that the Road Angel Pure does not work in vehicles with solar reflective windscreens. However, if you experience problems with GPS reception.

How do I configure the settings for my Pure?

Depending on the Pure model, update via the mobile app or by connecting the device to a PC or Mac using the updater software.

Does it detect Mobile Speed Camera Vans?

Yes. The Pure has known Mobile Safety Enforcement locations in the alerts database.

Why does it say searching for satellites?

Satellite search may take longer after a firmware update or if the device has been off for 6+ hours — this is normal as satellite data resets, which is common across GPS devices.

Does the Road Angel Pure series support smart motorways?

Yes. The Road Angel Pure series has Smart Motorway functionality. With a valid subscription, the Pure series keeps you informed on all controlled motorway's around the UK. When the variable speed limit changes on the Smart Motorway you are traveling on, the Pure series will alert you to the change of speed limit in real-time! This is all thanks to the direct connection to The Highways Agency that Road Angel utilises.

Does it work in the EU (Europe)?

No — Road Angel Pure devices currently only work in the UK, using a UK-based database and live data services.

Will the Road Angel Pure series know the actual road speed?

Yes. The Pure series has a Road Speed Library (RSL) database so will display the actual road speed limits.

How easy is it to fit the Road Angel Pure?

With our wireless windscreen mount, it has never been easier to fit a Road Angel Pure into your car. If you choose to have your device hardwired, we recommend always seeking professional advice from an auto electrician.

Why does my computer not recognise my Road Angel Pure?

Make sure your Pure is connected to your PC or Mac using the lead provided in the box and download the Updater Software from our Support Center. Once the Pure has connected to your computer a message should display on screen – Connected to PC. Please contact our support team on 0330 320 3030 for more information and support.

Why does my Road Angel Pure have low battery after a firmware update?

Charge the device via mains power after updating, as USB power may be insufficient.

Why is my database version different to the one on the website?

This may be due to update syncing or subscription status—ensure your device is connected and up to date.

Will Road Angel Pure devices receive EU support?

The Road Angel Pure Sync app is planned to support selected EU territories, including Germany and France, fromQ4 2026, subject to local laws and regulatory approval.

Why are speed camera alerts referred to as “Safety Zones” in Europe?

In many European countries, the use of traditional “speed camera alerts” is restricted by law.

To remain compliant, alerts are instead provided as “Safety Zone” notifications, similar toother legally compliant driver awareness systems used across Europe.

Will my device still functions in Europe?

Yes — your device will still power on, track GPS, and operate normally. However, live alerts, connectivity, and database coverage may be limited or unavailable, depending on the country.

Why are there restrictions on speed camera alerts in Europe?

Speed camera detection and alerting laws vary significantly across EU countries. 

Road Angel fully complies with all local legislation, which means: 

  • Some features may be restricted 
  • Alert terminology may change (e.g. “Safety Zones”) 
  • Functionality may differ by region
