Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the app need location permissions?

Location access is only used to deliver alerts, maintain live positioning, and enable background Bluetooth connection — not for tracking. (This feature is purely for Pure Sync, but uses the same app, so it is also applicable to other models.)

Is the Road Angel Pure a Speed Camera Detector?

Road Angel Pure is a GPS-based speed camera and speed limit alert system with real-time, cloud-updated data, including support for smart motorways.

What type of Speed Cameras does it detect?

Road Angel alerts to fixed, average, variable, red light, and dual speed cameras. It also includes mobile enforcement zones, accident blackspots, congestion areas, school zones, and ungated railway crossings.

Does Pure One need a smartphone?

No. Pure One has a built-in SIM and works independently, but a compatible smartphone is required for onboarding and managing settings.

Why am I not receiving alerts?

Check subscription status, GPS signal, location permissions, device settings, and perform a full smartphone restart.

How often is the database updated?

The database is updated daily and in real-time with continuous improvements.

Does it have to be hardwired in?

It may do, as long as you have positioned it in the correct place. Please note that it does not work in vehicles with solar reflective windscreens. However, if you experience problems with GPS reception, please ensure it is correctly positioned or try an alternative location.

How do I configure the settings for my Pure?

Depending on the Pure model, update via the mobile app or by connecting the device to a PC or Mac using the updater software.

Does it detect Mobile Speed Camera Vans?

Yes. The Pure has known Mobile Safety Enforcement locations in the alerts database.

Why does it say searching for satellites?

Satellite search may take longer after a firmware update or if the device has been off for 6+ hours — this is normal as satellite data resets, which is common across GPS devices.

Does the Road Angel Pure series support smart motorways?

Yes. The Road Angel Pure series has Smart Motorway functionality. With a valid subscription, the Pure series keeps you informed on all controlled motorway's around the UK. When the variable speed limit changes on the Smart Motorway you are traveling on, the Pure series will alert you to the change of speed limit in real-time! This is all thanks to the direct connection to The Highways Agency that Road Angel utilises.

Does it work in the EU (Europe)?

No — Road Angel Pure devices currently only work in the UK, using a UK-based database and live data services.

Will the Road Angel Pure series know the actual road speed?

Yes. The Pure series has a Road Speed Library (RSL) database so will display the actual road speed limits.

How easy is it to fit the Road Angel Pure?

With our wireless windscreen mount, it has never been easier to fit a Road Angel Pure into your car. If you choose to have your device hardwired, we recommend always seeking professional advice from an auto electrician.

Why does it have low battery after a firmware update?

It needs constant power updates done via OTA.

Why is my database version different to the one on the website?

This may be due to update syncing or subscription status—ensure your device is connected and up to date.

Will Road Angel Pure devices receive EU support?

The Road Angel Pure Sync app is planned to support selected EU territories, including Germany and France, fromQ4 2026, subject to local laws and regulatory approval.

Why are speed camera alerts referred to as “Safety Zones” in Europe?

In many European countries, the use of traditional “speed camera alerts” is restricted by law.

To remain compliant, alerts are instead provided as “Safety Zone” notifications, similar toother legally compliant driver awareness systems used across Europe.

Will my device still functions in Europe?

Yes — your device will still power on, track GPS, and operate normally. However, live alerts, connectivity, and database coverage may be limited or unavailable, depending on the country.

Why are there restrictions on speed camera alerts in Europe?

Speed camera detection and alerting laws vary significantly across EU countries.

Road Angel fully complies with all local legislation, which means:

  • Some features may be restricted
  • Alert terminology may change (e.g. “Safety Zones”)
  • Functionality may differ by region
